The sliding portion of the tool is necessary if the width of the board exceeds 6 inches.
NEW: Hercules Miter Saw is Here!
For the deck project, I only needed to make non-beveled cross cuts. It was such a pleasure using this tool compared with the last time I replaced bad deck boards using a handheld circular saw. The saw did not come with a blade. I had no idea which blade to buy so I did google searches to understand my options.
The choice was mainly one of tooth count. The fewer the teeth the faster and rougher the cut. As you increase the tooth count, the cut slows but it is finer. I settled on the 60 tooth count blade It's a great saw, accurate, clean cuts. This is why HF gets such a bad reputation. Something like a laser must be precise and adjustable. This is a great saw, but this one detail is a major oversight.
I went out and bought it, too. I really enjoy it but not being able to adjust or use the laser is frustrating. I'm in the market for a new miter. You think the Hercules for is the way to go vs the admiral, ridgid or the dewalt? I am a weekend warrior who does a decent amount of improvements and cabinetry.
Currently using the CE 10 inch sliding single bevel alongside a beefy table saw setup. I will say i dont currently own any 12 inch sawblades.
Its wildly better than the entry level miters and im thrilled with it. Also pleasantly surprised by the included blade. Have probably made about 1k cuts on it and it's still putting down very clean splinter free cuts.
Miter cuts are perfect, the LED guide is great. I did a room of baseboards and quarter rounds. Is it worth ?

Also, the fact that it's big means that the slide is reasonably useful. So I do many cuts on it that I was previously doing on my table saw. Downsides are that it's heavy, requires quite a bit of rear clearance, with the slide fully sticking out the back, it was too big to sit on a 2' counter against the wall and does not have a stand. The box is tough to fit in a normal car, so either have it delivered, pick it up in a truck, or unbox it at the store and put the saw in your trunk.
Oh, also, my 10" lives on and just now has a diablo steel demon blade for cutting conduit and other mild steel.

I'd probably dish out for the newer one. There's one thing I hate, a tool that's not quite enough.

After changing the blade, the only problem I had is I have to keep the slider well oiled, something about the bearing in there that sticks a little. Never a problem, and always seems true. Thanks for the review, I have been thinking about picking one up for a while.
